The Sunnah of Listening
Bismillah...
stening is an active and attentive skill that involves paying full attention to the speaker, making eye contact, and allowing them to finish their thoughts.
In the world of today, where the act of listening is rare, Islam—a complete way of life, does not only encourage good manners but also emphasizes a good listening manner. Hence, listening is not only a way of showing respect and humility, but a Sunnah of the prophet, peace be upon him.
1. The prophet (peace be upon him) despite being the best of mankind, was known for his exceptional listening manner.
Anas Ibn Malik reported in an Hadith that: Whenever the prophet peace be upon him met someone and shook his hand, he would not withdraw his hand until the other person did, and he would not turn his face until the other person turned away.
This shows how the prophet made everyone feel valued and respected by giving full attention to every interaction.
The Quran teaches the art of Listening: Allah says in Q39:17-18: "So give glad tidings to My servants, those who listen to the word and follow the best of it."
From the verse, we learn that a true believer listens before acting, therefore, listening is not passive, it is an act of reflection, and a sign of obedience to the most High—an act rewarded by Allah. So, when the Qur'aan is recited, then listen to it and pay attention, that you may receive Mercy." (Q7:204)
Listening to the Quran with humility is not only a sign of respect, but a way of increasing knowledge, softening the heart and bringing tranquility to the soul.
2. Listening Prior to Speaking: The prophet, peace be upon him, didn't only practice a good manner of listening but also encourages the Ummah to do the same.
He, peace be upon him said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent. Bukhari and Muslim.
To speak good, a true believer must listen well. This is because, listening helps in understanding expressions before answering, thereby preventing hasty arguments.
Practical Ways to Revive the Sunnah of Listening
Listen only to beneficial knowledge - lectures, Qur'an recitations with sincerity.
Give full attention to the speaker without any attempt to interrupt.
Put away any source of distraction when the speaker is speaking.
Try to understand every detail - not only words, but the emotions attached.
Reflect, think deeply before responding
Conclusion:
As soon to be Muslim pharmacists, we should cultivate the habit of reflective listening. This helps us in understanding our patients better, grasp key areas that need to be further questioned to ensure we give our best in achieving an optimised patient outcome. By so doing, we will be emulating the prophet, peace be upon him, and earn rewards from our Lord.
May Allah make us among those who listen and make the best out of it.
