Jannah Beneath Their Feet: The Virtue of Kindness to Parents
Bismillahi Rahmani-Raheem
Honouring one’s parents is one of the greatest duties in Islam, carrying immense spiritual rewards and blessings. Islam places parents in a position of deep respect, compassion, and gratitude. Their sacrifices, whether seen or unseen shape our lives from childhood to adulthood. This is why Allah repeatedly reminds believers to treat their parents with the highest level of kindness.
Allah says in the Qur’an: “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents..” (Qur’an 17:23).
This verse places kindness to parents immediately after the command to worship Allah alone, showing its importance. In the same verse, Allah continues: “If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them even a word of irritation, nor rebuke them, but speak to them noble words.” This teaches us that even the smallest sign of annoyance is discouraged.
The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) also emphasized this virtue. When asked which deed is most beloved to Allah, he said: “Prayer at its proper time.” When the companion asked, “Then what?” he replied: “Being good and dutiful to one’s parents.” This shows that caring for our parents is one of the most rewarding acts a Muslim can perform.
For students, balancing school responsibilities with family duties can sometimes feel challenging. Academic work, deadlines, and stress can make it easy to overlook small acts of kindness at home. However, Islam teaches that serving one’s parents is not a distraction from success, it is a path to blessings that make success easier. A simple smile, assisting with chores, running errands, or checking on their well-being can all count as valuable acts of worship.
The Qur’an again reminds us: “Show gratitude to Me and to your parents because to me is the final destination” (Qur’an 31:14). Gratitude is not only expressed in words but also in actions, being patient, listening respectfully, and showing appreciation even in small moments.
In times of stress, remembering the spiritual weight of this responsibility can bring peace. When you help your parents before studying, you are not losing time, you are gaining barakah (blessing). Many students testify that their minds become clearer and their tasks easier after helping their parents sincerely.
Being kind to parents is a lifelong commitment and one of the easiest paths to Jannah. The famous saying, “Paradise lies beneath the feet of mothers,” reminds us that caring for our parents opens doors to immense reward.
In everything you do,... your studies, ambitions, and daily routines, never forget the honour and blessing that comes from treating your parents with love, respect, and gentleness.
May Almighty Allah continue to ease our respective affairs. Aameen!
